Competition organisers and fencers are reliant on referees for the smooth and timely running of competitions. How often have you been to a tournament where you have left dissatisfied because your particular event was late because of a shortage of referees, or because you thought your result could have been better if the refereeing had been of a higher quality. The answer is simple — become a referee yourself, and convince your friends into becoming referees too. Not only will this help the running of competitions, but it will improve your fencing as well. As your knowledge of the rules and your understanding of phrasing increases you will be in a better position to know why decisions are given as they are and what to do about it
