Alex O'Connell wins the Essex & Suffolk Water Sports Personality of the Year 2008 Sports stars from Essex were awarded accolades at the prestigious 2008 Essex Sports Awards held in Chelmsford on Thursday 6th November. The Essex Sports Awards, hosted by sportessex, celebrate and recognise the very best in sport within the county and the people who participate, support its provision and invest personally in its ongoing development. Alex O'Connell from Brentwood Fencing Club won the Essex Works Young Sports Personality of the Year. O'Connell was Great Britain's only Fencer to qualify outright for the Beijing's Olympic Games. Chris Perks, director for Sport England East, said: “Thousands of people in Essex and across the region play crucial roles day in, day out, by participating, investing, volunteering and coaching in sport, and they tell us repeatedly that it is extraordinarily rewarding.
