________________________________________________________________________________ Essex Championships 2009 ________________________________________________________________________________
The Essex Foil and Epee Championships were held at Anglia Ruskin University's Mildmay Sports Hall in Chelmsford on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April 2009. Saturday began with the foil and competitors from 7 clubs competed to be Essex Champions 2009. Some very competitive fencing was seen in the pools with many close results. Despite a near early upset when fencing team mate Danny Holt, Dmitry Brown of Cyrano met Alex Savin of Newham Swords in the final. Savin who had celebrated his 15th Birthday only a week earlier showed great maturity in his fencing beating Brown 15-9. The women's foil saw some exciting fencing with Elizabeth Beaver of Hornchurch twice overturning her seeding to meet Helen McKean of Newham in the final. Again youth prevailed over experience and Beaver (14) won 15/6 The competition resumed on the Sunday with the Epee Championships. The pool results were again extremely close, only 2 points separated the top 3 ranked male fencers. Adam Lepley of Highams Park narrowly beat the more experienced Peter Brackin of CADS 15-14 in the semi-final to join Wayne Bryan also of CADS in the final. In final Bryan had the slight edge and secured victory 15-12. In the women's championships there were no upsets in the direct elimination and after a 15-14 semi-final thriller with CARU's Sherry Fuller, Heather Clarke of Wickford met Christine Brackin of Southend in the final. In a close fight Brackin triumphed 15-12. The organisers would like to thank all the competitors, volunteers and referees for their help in making both days run so smoothly.
